It's easy to talk about revival. Talk doesn't cost anything. But to actually seek revival is another matter, one that has a massive cost. The journey of desiring revival begins with hard questions, questions that must be wrestled with and struggled through over a period of years.
Questions like, “Have I lost my brokenness over the word of God?”
Revival begins in brokenness. When I stop being broken about God's word, I become in danger of slipping into complacency, lukewarmness, and comfort. Why? Because the primary agent of the Holy Spirit’s conviction in my life has become dead to me. I have deadened my conscience to the sting of the word of God. Sometimes, this "deadening" happens unintentionally: the noise of life overwhelms us with distractions, and we slowly, subtly lose our sensitivity and discernment of the Holy Spirit's voice. Sometimes, the "deadening" is intentional: decisions and habits that grieve the Spirit have made me deaf to His call. Regardless of how it happens, we have stopped letting ourselves be “cut to the heart” by God's word.
Only when we rediscover our brokenness – when we re-allow ourselves to be convicted and to be pierced by the penetrating word of God – will we ever become a Church that escapes complacency.
We must rediscover our brokenness before the Church escapes complacency.
“This is the one I esteem:
he who is humble and contrite in spirit,
and trembles at my word.
Do you seriously want revival? Then start trembling at His word. Start taking what it says seriously. Start allowing yourself to cry at what it means. Start pondering the life-changing ramifications of the living word of God. Stop protecting your mind from realizing you are in error, and start giving the word of God priority over your own selfishness.
We must begin giving the word of God priority over our own selfishness.
So let's not just talk about revival. Let's ask the hard questions. Be honest – it’s the only way to experience awakening. When God looks at you, does He see someone who is humble? Someone who is broken? Someone who trembles at His Word? How much do you honor the word of God in your spirit? Stop right now and pray: "Holy Spirit, renew my brokenness over Your Scripture." It's a dangerous prayer. And that's a perfect place to begin.
Revival begins with a brokenness over God's word.
